Good Foot Health

Getting into a Daily Routine.

Proper footcare is essentail to healthy, painless feet, and should be as much a part of your daily routine as brushing your teeth.  It's never too early or too late to start caring for your feet, and there's a lot you can do for yourself.  If you have diabetes, consult a podiatrist for a full check up and advice.

Follow these tips for good foot health.
1. Wash your feet everyday in warm soapy water (don't soak them, as this might destroy the natural oils) and dry thoroughly, especially between the toes.

2. If skin is dry, apply moisturizing cream all over the foot, except between your toes.

3. Lightly apply a foot powder.

4. Remove hard skin gently with a pumice stone, but not if its over a boney area or joint. If this is the case, or if the hard skin is painful, consult a podiatrist.

5. Keep feet warm, and exercise to improve the circulation.

6. Always wear the right shoe for the job - take a look at our shoe guide.

7. Seek prompt treatment for burns, cuts and breaks in the skin, and for any unusual changes in colour or temperature. This is particularly important if you diabetes.

If your feet hurt, something is wrong! You can also prevent problems before they occur by visiting a licensed podiatrist for advice on how to keep your feet healthy.

WORLD FOOT HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH 2014

This year the Special Focus of World Foot Health Awareness Month presents facts and figures on the various dermatological conditions that affect the foot. Podiatrists are generally one of the first health specialists who see and diagnose skin problems of the feet. They are then able to take the appropriate measures to adequately treat the condition.

Custom Made Orthotics sandals

Summer walks are so relaxing! But what happens if your feet are sore, your arches ache and those walks are not as enjoyable as they used to be.  My first question would be: “What shoes were you wearing when you went for your walk and how far did you go?

Were you walking in sandals? Are those sandals performing as they should? Are they giving you the stability and cushioning you need for long walks?  When buying sandals for walking look for a sturdy sole, multiple straps that has a buckle or Velcro fastening and a built in arch support. There are sandals on the market that are specifically designed for walking!  Wearing a sandal designed for walking will help those aches and pains.

But what if that heel pain will not go away?  We suggest that you consult with a Podiatrist.  Podiatrists will check foot function, mobility, have the ability to diagnose foot aliments and you do not need a referral to see a Podiatrist in Manitoba. Your podiatrist may recommend that your foot would function more effectively if it was stabilised and supported with custom made orthotics.  Those of us who know how great our feet feel in our custom made orthotics do not like to walk too far without them.  But what do you do when you want to wear your sandals and your orthotic just keeps slipping out of the sandals?

There are sandals on the market that are especially made to accommodate custom made orthotics with a removable foot-bed or your Podiatrist will make your orthotics to fit a sandal exactly.  These are called orthotic sandals and they come in many fashionable and functional styles!

If you foot are painful do not suffer unnecessary your Podiatrist can help you! Find a podiatrist near you from our website or from your local Yellow Pages.

Walking Sandals

The walking Sandal - it means business!

Many sandals now are made for energetic walking. These sandals give motion control, stability and some come with an enclosed toe to give protection from rocks, tree roots and sticks.  The things you may want to look for when selecting the perfect walking sandal for you is:

1.   Adjustable Velcro or buckle straps for a secure fit.  You want to ensure that you have a snug and secure fit around the heel and upper foot.  This will help to stabilise the foot in the sandal.

2.   Many quality walking and sport sandals are available with removable foot beds this accommodates for your custom made orthotics.  When you wear your sandals with your orthotics this will give you more control for your foot as you are walking.

3.   Check the material the sole is made of to see if it will provide you traction support.  If you are going to be around water a lot, look for a non-slip sole.

Walking sandals have changed!  They are now highly functional, have great foot support, and are great looking, comfortable and...fun!  So have fun shopping for the walking sandal style that suits your foot and is capable of the level of walking you intend to do!

Happy walking!
